Frequently Asked Questions about the Recreational Program
A. How do I sign up my child?
Go to the registration tab on the top of this page and click on the Fall 2008 registration link. The Soccer Association only takes online registration. Paper registration in not an option.
NLSA accepts registrations for recreational soccer until the start of the season. Late registrations are accepted on a first come, first served basis until each team in an age group is filled. There is a $10 charge associated with registering late.
B. How are recreational teams formed by NLSA?
NLSA wants to provide the best possible experience for its youth players. In order to accomplish this we use a random computer selection of teams. This is done with a push of a button. The only exception is made for coaches coaching together.
C. I and a friend would like to coach together. Is this possible?
This is possible and encouraged. This is one of the valid requests listed. This request is only for adults who want to coach a team. Players can be placed on the same team if their parents would like to coach together. Please indicate in the space provided.
D. I have two children in the same age group; can they be on the same team?
Yes, in all cases NLSA places siblings on the same team, including stepbrothers and sisters, if requested.
There are no other valid requests.
E. What days are games on?
Games are played on Saturday s. Game times normally run from 8am to 12pm.
F. How much and when do teams practice?
This is the prerogative of the coach. When rosters are given to the coaches we encourage the coach to meet with the parents to set up a practice schedule. Normally teams practice once per week (in the evenings) in addition to the game. Prior to the season, practices may occur more often.
G. When and how will I find out what team my child is playing on?
Rosters are given to the coaches, at a NLSA coaches meeting. NLSA asks coaches to contact players within 1 week of receiving the rosters, to set up a team and parent meeting.
H. What guidelines does the New London Soccer Association have on playing time?
In the recreational soccer division, it is the policy of the New London Soccer Association that all players must play a minimum of 50% of each game.
I. Why does NLSA not form teams based on requests?
- There are a number of reasons why NLSA has gone to randomized teams. Among them are: Fairness of competition. We have found some coaches try to "load" teams to assure a winning record. This practice resulted in many lopsided scores and discouraged many young players.
- Players who play with the same coach and players tend to become narrower in their ability to play the game, as they almost always end up playing the same position. It is our experience as players play with different coaches and players they are exposed to more of the game.
- This presents opportunities to players (and parents) to meet new friends and develop relationships which will help each of them as they go forward into junior high and high school.
- It is hoped players and parents will take the good experiences from each team and coach to build on to assure a good experience for more and more players each year.
- As part of our charter from the state, NLSA is not to have more that 5 players on the same recreational team from year to year. NLSA has chosen to randomize teams as our method of complying with this rule.
